Halo Monitoring, Inc. , makers of wireless healthcare technology, were recognized as a recipient of the Valley Innovation Alliance’s Technology Innovation award on Tuesday. Halo Monitoring, Inc., along with founder Chris Otto, was recognized for engineering and bringing to market a device for wirelessly monitoring independently living elderly persons, resulting in a new world of safety and longevity, inside or outside of formal assisted living facilities.

myHalo is the world’s most advanced personal health monitoring and alert system for seniors. It immediately detects when the senior user falls and automatically transmits the alert to casual or professional caregivers, or to Emergency Medical Services (EMS). According to a recent study by the British Medical Journal, manual panic button alarms are not activated in 80 percent of fall incidents. In comparison, myHalo is a proactive system that automatically detects falls and other serious health concerns without relying on the user to press a button. In addition, caregivers can check a secure web page which monitors the senior’s vital signs, activity, steps taken, sleep and wake patterns and more. While authorized caregivers receive a text or phone alert in the event of a panic or fall, they can also check on the senior to confirm they are ok.

Valley Innovation Alliance is a Southeast workforce and economic development region created through the Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) initiative awarded through the U.S. Department of Labor. Through the $5 million WIRED grant initiative, VIA has been able to fund over 40 innovative programs.

In addition to Halo Monitoring, the following companies were also recognized for their technology innovation: Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Alabama, CFD Research, Inc., The Hudson-Alpha Institute for Biotechnology, Diatherix Laboratories, Inc., Ft.
